Background
The body of Shukri Abdi, a Somali refugee was on Thursday 22nd June recovered from the River Irwell at midnight in Lancashire, Bury.
The official report is that Shukri drowned after entering the water to possibly cool off from the heat. Despite being bullied at Broad Oak Sports College which she attended, this is not being treated as a suspicious case and has been deemed a ‘tragic incident’ by the Greater Manchester Police.
Given this official report however, outrage has ensued on twitter following some unconfirmed allegations that Shukri Abdi had bite marks on her body and that a man may have allegedly witnessed her murder (dismissed as drunk by the police). Additionally, given that Shukri was unable to swim, many are speculating on the suspicious circumstances regarding her death- namely why she would have willingly approached the water. Whilst we wait on more information to emerge as well as the veracity of such allegations, some action steps are listed below.

Re: Shukri Abdi’s case
I am writing to voice my concern about the treatment of 12-year-old Shukri Abdi’s case which was recently dismissed as an accident. I am sure you are aware of the specifics of her unfortunate death which has been treated as a ‘tragic incident’.
I am concerned about the way this case has been treated and urge you to reconsider how Shukri’s case has been handled in light of her family’s reaction and Shukri being a victim of bullying. I am calling on you to investigate Broad Oak Sports College for potential negligence, failed safeguarding and a culture of harassment that not only led to the atrocious bullying of Shukri Abdi over a prolonged period of time but also the suicide of a teacher prior to this.
I urge you to consider the possibility:
- That there was foul play involved in Shukri’s tragic death.
- That there was negligence and a failure in safeguarding on the part of Broad Oak Sports College.
I look forward to your response regarding this urgent matter.
Yours sincerely,

I am writing to voice my concern about the treatment of 12-year-old Shukri Abdi’s case which was recently dismissed as an accident. I am sure you are aware of the specifics of her unfortunate death which has been treated as a ‘tragic incident’. I however have reason to believe that following reports of her prolonged bullying at Broad Oak Sports College there may have been foul play involved.
Shukri’s family members have mentioned that everything that happened during that day was out of character for her, including the fact that she would not have approached the water due her not being able to swim.
I am concerned about the way this case has been treated and urge you to reconsider how Shukri’s case has been handled in light of her family’s reaction and Shukri being a victim of bullying.
